A 69 year old man from St Austell was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison on Friday 9 September after he admitted selling cheap, smuggled tobacco from a pub in the town.

An operation tackling illegal tobacco products saw 89,120 illegal cigarettes seized by Trading Standards teams in the South West of England. In total, more than 2.5m illegal cigarettes were seized across England. 

Fifty-four per cent of visits to 50 premises resulted in seizures in the South West as part of a national trading standards operation to combat illegal tobacco in England.

A man who turned his Devon home into a shop selling illegal cigarettes to school children has been spared a jail sentence.Roger Gerrey, 65, from Lemon Place, Newton Abbot, was selling fake brands to children, Exeter Crown Court heard.In two raids on his house nearly £13,000 in cash and £14,000 worth of tobacco were discovered.Gerrey was given a 12 month sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting seven offences.

On 14th August 2012 Ferhat Yilmaz, who lives in Swindon, pleaded guilty at Chippenham Magistrates Court after being charged with 14 offences relating to illicit tobacco. Following an anonymous complaint that non duty paid tobacco was being sold from underneath the counter at the Kings Off Licence in Malmesbury, Trading Standards Officers carried out a test purchase operation on 13th March 2012. The seller, Mr Yilmaz (who is not the shop owner) sold a packet of Marlboro Gold cigarettes which were labelled in a foreign language.
