Under the strategy set by commissioners in local authorities to drive down the demand of illegal tobacco, we have supported all three phases of this Smokefree South West campaign, each building increased public awareness and action. The attached report outlines the regional results of phase three of the campaign, which once again shows positive outcomes. The latest campaign reported over half a million more people were ‘very uncomfortable’ about the availability of illegal tobacco in their local community. Perhaps most importantly however, is that this shift in awareness has resulted in almost a third more people across the South West reporting that they are now more compelled and likely to report illegal tobacco trading in their local area.  These positive results are reflected in the boosted number of information reports received from members of the public during the quarter the campaign ran – a 200 per cent increase compared to the previous quarter when no campaign was live, and a 300 per cent increase compared to year on year totals. This campaign delivered its objectives through the combination of a centrally coordinated media campaign, alongside targeted community activity, which was shaped using expert knowledge from local teams.
